Surgical Style Masks

Tutorials & patterns for surgical style protective face masks out of non-woven fabric.

This pattern PDF is from my local hospitals. Here is what else you need to know:

  • The only supplies you absolutely need for a mask are fabric, thread and sewing needle.

  • OLY Fun fabric is the best barrier/filter, doesn't fray, is breathable, recommended by hospitals, and is widely available. For masks made out of material that frays, please see the cotton mask tutorial.

  • Make the mask with two layers of OLY Fun for extra protection.

  • Using garden wire ties is best for the nose wire, but in a pinch, anything will do, or nothing at all. Coated wire, floral wire, chenille stems (pipe cleaners), twist ties, or pieces of folded aluminum pans are other options.

  • OLY Fun fabric should be hand washed or washed on the delicate cycle and hung to dry.

  • No elastic is needed, but it's nice!

Fitted Style Masks

Tutorials & patterns for fitted style protective face masks. I am working on digitizing a multi-size pattern and making an instruction video. For now, here are links to the best I have found.

The fitted face masks gives superior protection, but are more time consuming to make.

  • The only supplies you absolutely need for a mask are fabric, thread and sewing needle.

  • OLY Fun fabric is the best barrier/filter fabric. It doesn't fray, is breathable, recommended by hospitals, and is widely available.

  • Two layers of OLY Fun, topped with fashion fabric is the ultimate face mask. Masks can also be made from two layers of OLY Fun, or one layer of OLY Fun and one layer of fashion fabric. Use a woven, non-stretch fabric, for best results.

  • Using garden wire ties is best for the nose wire, but in a pinch, anything will do, or nothing at all. Coated wire, floral wire, chenille stems (pipe cleaners), twist ties, or pieces of folded aluminum pans are other options.

  • Prewash fashion fabrics before cutting & sewing.

  • OLY Fun fabric should be hand washed or washed on the delicate cycle and hung to dry.

  • 1/4" elastic is best for keeping these on your head. Ties can also be made out of 1/2" strips of OLY fun, shoelaces, ribbon, 1/8" elastic, 1/2" elastic cut in half lengthwise,  or whatever you can find.

  • Cut your inner layer 1" smaller on the outside edges to use the sewing method in the video.

  • You can make this stuff-able for use with a replaceable filter by hemming the sides of the inner layer before construction.
